The Pearl Of Great Price

Genesis 28:10-19a; Psalm 139:1-12, 23-24; Romans 8:12-25; Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43 BIGFORK COMMUNITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH July 26, 2020 – 8th Sunday after Pentecost Everyone has a God. For some it is money. For others it is fame. For others it is power over others. Jesus points us today to the one true God. And that God is a pearl so magnificent that our prenatal instinct for doing the right thing will make us set aside all other priorities to serve that one. Sooner or later all things merge into one and a river runs through it. In lifting up this pearl beyond price, Jesus does not seek to abolish the law and the prophets but to fulfill them. This is, after all, the First Commandment Moses

The Lord Is In This Place

I signed up for a Disciple Bible Study class at Billings Hope United Methodist Church in 1996, a few months after the first woman to be appointed as their pastor had been welcomed to the pulpit. Sandy Storment watched over us for two years of classes devoted to a one-year curriculum. There was just too much to talk about to get it all said in one year. As we read the

Doing The Good We Want

Psalm 72; Romans 7:15-25a; Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30 BIGFORK COMMUNITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH July 5, 2020 – 5th Sunday after Pentecost Paul boasts in his second letter to the Corinthians of being taken to the third heaven and being told things no mortal can speak…but then…he notes that a thorn was put in his flesh…a messenger of Satan, he says…to keep him from being too elated. He writes that he asked God three times to remove that thorn, but each time God replied, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” Paul was a package, with strengths and weaknesses. We are all packages, he writes…full of pluses and minuses…protons and electrons. Our lives, he notes, are
